Why the linkage matters

Aadhaar-PAN linking exists so the Income Tax Department can de-duplicate PAN records and reduce identity fraud in tax filings. An unlinked PAN can become inoperative, which affects your ability to file returns, complete KYC with banks and mutual funds, and receive tax refunds without complications.

Before you start: what you'll need

Keep your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and the mobile number registered with Aadhaar handy โ€” you'll need that mobile number to receive an OTP during the process. Make sure the name and date of birth on both documents match; mismatches are the most common reason a link request fails.

Linking online, step by step

Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal and find the 'Link Aadhaar' option, usually under quick links on the homepage, without needing to log in for the initial check. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number when prompted.

The system will show whether a fee is applicable based on your situation. If required, complete the payment through the e-Pay Tax service first โ€” the portal will not proceed with linking until any applicable fee is confirmed as paid.

After payment (if applicable), submit the linking request. You'll receive an OTP on your Aadhaar-registered mobile number to confirm the request. Once validated, linking is typically processed within a few days, though it can take longer during high-traffic periods.

How to check your current status

The same e-filing portal has a separate 'Link Aadhaar Status' checker where you can enter your PAN and Aadhaar to see whether they're already linked, pending, or not linked at all โ€” useful to check before starting the process again, since submitting duplicate requests doesn't speed anything up.

If your name doesn't match

When the linking fails due to a name or date-of-birth mismatch, the practical fix is to correct whichever document has the error โ€” typically through the Aadhaar enrolment portal for Aadhaar corrections, or the PAN correction request via NSDL/UTIITSL for PAN โ€” and then retry linking once the correction is reflected.

Frequently asked questions

An inoperative PAN can block return filing, delay refunds, and cause TDS to be deducted at a higher rate. It's generally reactivated once linking is completed, though processing can take some time.
