GST Registration Process for Small Businesses: When and How

In this guide

  1. When is GST registration mandatory
  2. Voluntary registration
  3. The registration process
  4. Composition vs regular at registration

When is GST registration mandatory

GST registration is compulsory if your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh for goods suppliers (₹20 lakh for service providers) in normal category states. For special category states (Northeastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, etc.), the threshold is ₹20 lakh for goods and ₹10 lakh for services.

Registration is also mandatory regardless of turnover if you: sell through e-commerce platforms (Amazon, Flipkart), make inter-state supplies, are required to pay tax under reverse charge, or deal in specific categories like petroleum products, alcohol, or tobacco.

Voluntary registration

Even if your turnover is below the threshold, you can voluntarily register for GST. The benefits include: being able to claim input tax credit on your business purchases, appearing credible to business customers who need GST invoices, and eligibility to sell on e-commerce platforms.

The downside is the compliance burden: monthly or quarterly returns, invoice-level record keeping, and annual return filing. Make sure the ITC benefit and business credibility outweigh the compliance cost before voluntarily registering.

The registration process

Apply online at the GST portal (gst.gov.in) through Services > Registration > New Registration. You'll need: PAN card, Aadhaar, business address proof, bank statement, photograph, and authorization letter (if applying through a representative). The process takes 3-7 working days if documents are in order.

After submission, a GST officer may verify your application. If there's a query (additional document needed), respond within 7 working days to avoid rejection. Once approved, you'll receive your GSTIN (GST Identification Number) and can start issuing tax invoices.

Composition vs regular at registration

At the time of registration, you'll be asked whether to register under the regular scheme or the composition scheme. Choose composition if your turnover is under ₹1.5 crore and you primarily sell to end consumers (can't claim ITC but pay lower, simpler tax). Choose regular if your turnover is above ₹1.5 crore, you sell B2B, or your customers need ITC on your invoices.

Frequently asked questions

GST registration is free on the government portal. If you use a CA or consultant, they typically charge ₹1,000-5,000 for the registration and initial guidance.
