How to Apply for a PAN Card Online: Complete 2026 Guide

Who needs a PAN card
A PAN (Permanent Account Number) is mandatory for anyone earning taxable income in India, conducting financial transactions above certain limits (₹50,000+ for many categories), filing income tax returns, or investing in mutual funds, stocks, or real estate. Without a PAN, you'll face higher TDS rates, limitations on banking transactions, and difficulties with KYC processes.
PAN is also required for opening a bank account, purchasing property above ₹10 lakh, and making payments to foreign vendors.
How to apply online
Visit the NSDL or UTIITSL portal (both are authorised to issue PAN). For NSDL, go to onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html. Fill in the online form with your personal details, upload the required documents (Aadhaar, photograph, and signature), and pay the processing fee (₹107 for Indian addresses, ₹1,017 for foreign addresses).
The processing time is typically 15-20 days. You'll receive an acknowledgement number that you can use to track your application status online.
Documents required
For Indian citizens, you need one identity proof (Aadhaar, voter ID, passport, or driving licence), one address proof (same options), and one date of birth proof (birth certificate, matriculation certificate, or Aadhaar). If applying through the Aadhaar-based e-KYC route, only your Aadhaar number and a photograph are needed — no physical document submission required.
Instant e-PAN
For faster processing, the Income Tax Department offers free instant e-PAN allotment based on Aadhaar e-KYC. Visit the e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in), click 'Instant e-PAN', enter your Aadhaar number, and verify through OTP. You'll receive your PAN (in PDF format) within 10 minutes. The e-PAN is legally equivalent to the physical card for all purposes.
Frequently asked questions
No. Having more than one PAN is illegal and can attract a penalty of ₹10,000. If you've been accidentally issued two, surrender one immediately through the NSDL/UTIITSL portal.
