PM Kisan Samman Nidhi: Complete Guide for Farmers

What PM Kisan offers
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM Kisan) is a central government scheme that provides ₹6,000 per year to eligible farmer families, paid in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 each. The money is transferred directly into the farmer's bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), eliminating middlemen.
Since its launch in February 2019, the scheme has disbursed over ₹2.8 lakh crore to more than 11 crore farmer families, making it one of the largest direct transfer programs in the world.
Who is eligible
All farmer families with cultivable land are eligible. This includes small and marginal farmers (landholding up to 2 hectares) as well as larger landholders. The scheme covers all states and union territories. However, certain categories are excluded: institutional landholders, former or current constitutional post holders, government employees (except Class IV/MTS), income taxpayers, professionals paying income tax, and pensioners receiving ₹10,000+ monthly.
The land must be in the name of the farmer family — joint ownership with a spouse is fine, but the land must be recorded in revenue records.
How to apply
The simplest way is through the PM Kisan portal (pmkisan.gov.in) using Aadhaar-based registration. You'll need your Aadhaar number, bank account details linked to Aadhaar, and land records. Alternatively, you can visit your nearest CSC (Common Service Centre) or the local agriculture office for assisted registration.
After submitting, the application goes through verification by the state government before approval. This typically takes 30-60 days, after which the first instalment is released.
Checking your instalment status
Visit pmkisan.gov.in and click on 'Beneficiary Status'. Enter your Aadhaar number, mobile number, or registration number to see the status of all instalments. The portal shows whether each instalment has been credited, is pending, or failed due to Aadhaar-bank account linking issues.
If your instalment shows as 'fto generated' (fund transfer order) but the money hasn't arrived, check with your bank — sometimes the credit is delayed by a day or two, or there's a mismatch in account details.
Common problems and fixes
The most frequent issues are: Aadhaar name mismatch (the name on Aadhaar must match the name in the bank account), bank account not linked to Aadhaar (go to your bank and request seeding), and land records not uploaded to the state database (contact your local tehsildar). If your instalment keeps failing, check the 'self-registration' option on the portal to update your details.
Frequently asked questions
No. PM Kisan requires cultivable land in the applicant's name. Landless labourers are not covered under this scheme.
