Where it shines

The file analysis workflow is the feature most people underuse. Drop in a messy spreadsheet and ask for a cleaned summary with charts, and it writes and runs Python to do it, showing the code. For business users this replaces a genuine chunk of analyst work. Voice mode has become good enough for hands-free brainstorming while walking, and the custom GPT ecosystem means you can save a system prompt, a knowledge base and a set of tools as a shareable mini-app without writing code.

Its other advantage is consistency. Competitors beat it on individual axes — Claude on long-document writing, Perplexity on cited research — but ChatGPT is rarely the worst option at anything, which is exactly what you want from a default tool.

Where it falls short

Rate limits are the recurring frustration on the $20 plan: heavy users hit caps on the strongest models mid-afternoon and get downgraded to a weaker one, sometimes without noticing. Hallucination remains a real risk when web search does not trigger, and the interface does not make it obvious whether an answer came from search or from model memory. Teams handling regulated data should budget for Team or Enterprise rather than relying on personal Plus accounts, because the default data-training setting differs between them.

Free is enough for casual questions. Plus at $20 per month is the sweet spot for almost everyone. Pro at $200 only makes sense if AI is central to your working day. Team adds admin controls and training exclusion at around $30 per user per month.

Who should use it

Anyone who wants one assistant that handles the widest range of work with the fewest surprises. Choose Claude instead if your work is long-form writing or large document analysis, or Perplexity if you mainly need sourced answers.
