Adobe Firefly review — Commercially safe image generation trained on licensed content, built into Creative Cloud.

What we like

  • Trained on Adobe Stock and licensed content, with IP indemnification for enterprise customers
  • Generative Fill in Photoshop is the most practical AI feature in any design tool
  • Generates editable vectors in Illustrator, which no general generator does
  • Included in Creative Cloud subscriptions

What we do not

  • Raw image quality trails Midjourney and Flux
  • Generative credits run out quickly on heavy use
  • Content restrictions are conservative even by industry standards

What it is

Firefly is Adobe's generative model family, and its differentiator is legal rather than technical: it was trained on Adobe Stock imagery, openly licensed work and public domain content, and Adobe offers enterprise customers indemnification against IP claims arising from its output.

Where it shines

Generative Fill in Photoshop is the most genuinely useful AI feature shipped in any creative tool. Select a region, describe what should be there, and it extends a background, removes a distraction or adds an element while matching lighting and perspective. Retouchers who were sceptical use it daily now.

Illustrator's generative vector output is the other unique capability. It produces editable paths rather than pixels, which means the result drops straight into a real design workflow. No general-purpose image generator does this.

For enterprises, the training-data provenance settles procurement arguments that otherwise stall AI adoption in marketing departments entirely.

Where it falls short

Standalone image quality is mid-pack. Compared with Midjourney or Flux, Firefly output is competent but conservative, and it struggles with the more dramatic or stylised briefs. Content filters are stricter than most competitors, blocking prompts that other tools handle without comment.

The credit system frustrates heavy users — a Creative Cloud allowance disappears in a couple of intensive sessions, and buying more adds cost on top of an already expensive subscription.

Pricing in plain English

A small free monthly credit allowance. Firefly Standard at $9.99 a month for 2,000 credits, Pro at $29.99 for 7,000. Creative Cloud plans include credits, so many Adobe customers already have access without realising.

Who should use it

Corporate creative teams, agencies with legal review requirements, and anyone already working in Photoshop and Illustrator. If you have no compliance constraints and want the best-looking output, Midjourney or Flux is the better buy.

Adobe Firefly FAQs

Is Adobe Firefly safe for commercial use?

It is the safest mainstream option. Adobe trained it on Adobe Stock and licensed or public domain content, and offers IP indemnification to enterprise customers — a guarantee no other major generator provides.

What are generative credits?

Each generation consumes credits from a monthly allowance tied to your plan. Creative Cloud subscriptions include a quota; heavy users buy more or subscribe to a Firefly plan.

Is Firefly better than Midjourney?

Not on image quality. It wins on legal safety, vector output and integration with Photoshop and Illustrator, which for corporate creative teams often outweighs raw aesthetics.
