Stable Diffusion review — Open-weight image generation you run yourself — maximum control, zero per-image cost.

What we like

  • Free to run locally with no per-image cost once you own the hardware
  • ControlNet, LoRA and inpainting give control no closed tool matches
  • Enormous community model library for any style imaginable
  • Your images never leave your machine

What we do not

  • Steep setup and learning curve — you are assembling a pipeline, not opening an app, and a capable GPU makes a big difference
  • Base model quality trails the best closed models without community fine-tunes
  • Licensing varies by model version; check before commercial use

What it is

Stable Diffusion is the open-weight family of image models that made local generation possible. You download the weights, run them on your own GPU through an interface such as ComfyUI or Automatic1111, and generate as many images as your hardware allows for no marginal cost.

Where it shines

Control. ControlNet lets you condition an image on a pose skeleton, depth map or edge outline, which means you can specify exactly where a figure stands and how they are posed rather than rerolling until luck cooperates. LoRA fine-tuning lets you teach the model your product, your character or your brand style from a few dozen images, on consumer hardware, in under an hour. Node-based interfaces like ComfyUI turn the whole thing into a reproducible pipeline you can run in batch.

Privacy and cost follow from running it yourself. Nothing leaves your machine, there is no content filter beyond what you configure, and generating ten thousand product variants costs electricity rather than API credits.

Where it falls short

The learning curve is real. Samplers, schedulers, CFG scale, VAE files, model merges — the vocabulary alone takes a weekend, and community tooling breaks often. You also need a decent GPU; below about 8 GB of VRAM the experience becomes painful.

Out of the box, base model quality no longer leads the field. It becomes competitive once you add the right community fine-tune, which means knowing which of thousands of models to pick. Licensing is the last trap: terms differ across model versions and community derivatives, and some require a paid licence above a revenue threshold. Check the model card before shipping commercial work.

Pricing in plain English

Free if you self-host. Around a cent per image through the Stability API. Ten to thirty dollars a month through third-party hosted interfaces if you want the models without the setup.

Who should use it

Technical users, studios doing high-volume or highly controlled generation, and anyone who needs images to stay on their own hardware. Everyone else will be happier with Midjourney or Flux.

Stable Diffusion FAQs

Is Stable Diffusion really free?

The model weights are free to download and run. You pay in hardware and setup time — a GPU with at least 8-12 GB of VRAM makes local generation comfortable. Hosted APIs charge per image instead.

Can I use Stable Diffusion images commercially?

Usually yes, but the licence differs by model version and by any community fine-tune you use. Read the specific model card rather than assuming; some newer Stability releases require a paid licence above a revenue threshold.

What is ControlNet?

An extension that conditions generation on a pose skeleton, depth map, edge map or scribble, so you control composition precisely instead of hoping the prompt lands. It is the single biggest reason professionals use Stable Diffusion.
