How to Check Your EPFO Balance

Four official routes, all free. The differences are convenience and how much detail you get.

The short version

  • All four methods need an activated UAN and a registered mobile number.
  • The passbook portal gives the most detail, including the contribution history.
  • A missing recent month is usually an employer filing delay, not a missing contribution.
  • EPFO never charges for balance checks, and no agent is needed.

The four methods

Using the passbook portal

  1. Go to passbook.epfindia.gov.in.
  2. Log in with your UAN and password. If you have not activated your UAN, do that first on the member portal.
  3. Select the member ID for the employer whose account you want to view. Each employer has a separate member ID under your UAN.
  4. The passbook shows every contribution — yours and the employer’s — the EPS share, and interest credited at the end of each financial year.
  5. Download the passbook if you need it for a loan application or for your records.

When the balance looks wrong

  • The most recent month is missing: normal. The passbook updates only after your employer files the monthly return and EPFO processes it. A one to two month lag is routine.
  • Several months are missing: raise it with your employer first. It usually means returns have not been filed, which is the employer’s obligation.
  • The employer contribution looks smaller than yours: expected if your basic exceeds ₹15,000, because part of the employer share goes to EPS rather than EPF.
  • Interest has not appeared: EPFO credits interest once a year, after the rate is declared and ratified. It appears as a single entry at the end of the financial year.
  • An old employer’s balance is missing: it may not have been transferred. Check whether all your member IDs appear under your UAN, and file a transfer request if one is missing.

If nothing works

If your UAN is not activated, activate it on the member portal first — everything else depends on it. If your mobile number is not registered with EPFO, the missed call and SMS routes will not work at all, and updating it requires your employer.

For unresolved issues, the EPFiGMS grievance portal is the official route and generally produces a faster response than calling. Include your UAN, the member ID concerned and the specific months in question.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my latest month’s contribution not showing?
Because the passbook updates only after your employer files the monthly return and EPFO processes it. A lag of one to two months is normal. If several months are missing, the return probably has not been filed — raise it with your employer.
Can I check my PF balance without a UAN?
Not through the online methods, which all depend on an activated UAN. If you do not have one, get it from your employer or use Know Your UAN on the member portal, then activate it. It takes a few minutes and is free.
Why is interest not showing in my passbook?
EPFO credits interest once a year, after the rate for that year is declared and ratified. It appears as a single entry at the end of the financial year rather than accruing monthly in the passbook, even though it is calculated on the monthly running balance.
