How this calculator works

A single discount is straightforward: multiply by one minus the rate. Where retail gets interesting is the second discount — the "extra 20% off already reduced prices" that appears at checkout.

Those discounts apply sequentially, not additively. Fifty percent off followed by twenty percent off is not seventy percent off; it is sixty. The second discount is calculated on the already-reduced price, so it removes less in absolute terms than the headline suggests.

The gap widens as the discounts get larger. A "70% + 30%" offer sounds like the item is free. It is actually 79% off — generous, but not free.

The GST option exists because Indian retail prices are usually inclusive of tax, but not always. If the discounted price is exclusive, tax is added to the reduced figure, not the original.

The real discount is 60%, not 70%. The item costs ₹800 rather than the ₹600 the advertising implies — a ₹200 gap on a ₹2,000 item.

Things worth knowing

  • Stacked discounts multiply, they never add. Two discounts of 50% and 20% give 60% off in total.
  • Discounts advertised against "maximum retail price" can be misleading if the MRP was never the actual selling price.
  • Check whether the quoted price includes GST. In Indian retail it usually does, but online marketplaces and services sometimes show tax separately at checkout.
  • Bank and card offers are often capped in rupees regardless of the percentage advertised. "10% instant discount up to ₹1,000" is only 10% on purchases below ₹10,000.
  • Coupon codes may apply to the pre-discount or post-discount price depending on the retailer. The order changes the final amount.

Frequently asked questions

Is 50% + 20% the same as 70% off?
No. It is 60% off. The second discount applies to the price after the first has been taken off, so a ₹2,000 item becomes ₹1,000 and then ₹800 — not ₹600. Stacked discounts always work out lower than their sum.
How do I calculate the discount percentage from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. From ₹2,000 down to ₹800: (1,200 ÷ 2,000) × 100 = 60%.
Does GST apply before or after the discount?
GST is charged on the transaction value, which is the price after any discount shown on the invoice at the time of sale. Discounts given after the sale follow different rules. For everyday shopping, the practical answer is that tax applies to what you actually pay.
Why do bank card offers save less than advertised?
Because they are usually capped. "10% instant discount up to ₹1,500" gives the full 10% only on purchases up to ₹15,000; above that, the saving stays at ₹1,500 and the effective percentage falls.
