How this calculator works

This converter handles six categories: length, weight, area, volume, speed and digital storage. Every unit within a category is defined by how many base units it equals, so any pair can be converted with a multiplication and a division.

The area section is the one worth dwelling on, because Indian property is still measured in units that vary by region and, in the case of the bigha, by state and even district. A guntha is 101.17 square metres and forty of them make an acre — the standard in Maharashtra and Karnataka land records. A cent is one-hundredth of an acre, used across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. A square yard, called a gaj in the north, is 0.836 square metres.

The bigha is the difficult one. There is no national definition. The figure used here reflects the common Uttar Pradesh measure, but a bigha in West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan, Assam or Gujarat is a different size. For anything involving money or land records, confirm the local definition rather than relying on a general converter.

Digital storage includes both the decimal units (kilobyte as 1,000 bytes) and the binary ones (kibibyte as 1,024 bytes). Storage manufacturers use the decimal definition while operating systems have historically reported the binary one, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as roughly 931 GB.

Twenty guntha is exactly half an acre, or 21,780 square feet. A price quoted per guntha can be compared with one quoted per square foot by dividing by 1,089.

Things worth knowing

  • A bigha has no standard size in India. It differs by state and sometimes by district. The value used here is the common Uttar Pradesh measure and should not be relied on for a transaction elsewhere.
  • For any land transaction, use the measurement recorded in the official land record and confirm the local unit definition with the revenue office.
  • Kilobytes are 1,000 bytes and kibibytes are 1,024. Storage manufacturers use the decimal units, which is why a drive always shows less capacity than the label suggests.
  • These conversions are exact within the definitions given. Legal measurement in India is metric under the Legal Metrology Act.
  • For temperature, use the dedicated temperature converter — it needs offsets rather than simple factors and cannot use this table.

How big is a bigha?
It depends entirely on where you are. There is no national definition — a bigha in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan, Assam and Gujarat are all different sizes, and some states have more than one local variant. Always confirm the definition used in the specific district before relying on a conversion.
What is a cent in land measurement?
One-hundredth of an acre, roughly 40.47 square metres or 435.6 square feet. It is the common unit in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, where plot sizes are usually quoted in cents rather than square feet.
Why does my 1 TB hard drive show less than 1 TB?
Because the manufacturer counts a terabyte as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes while the operating system has historically divided by 1,024 at each step. The same physical capacity works out to about 931 of the operating system’s "gigabytes". Nothing is missing — the two are using different definitions of the same word.
