How this calculator works

Age looks trivial to calculate and is not. Subtracting the year, month and day separately breaks whenever the birth day is later in the month than today, because months have different lengths — and the naive fix of borrowing days from the previous month can produce a negative result.

This calculator counts whole elapsed months first, then measures the leftover in days. Starting from your date of birth, it steps forward month by month for as long as it can without passing the target date, then counts the remaining days. That approach always produces a sensible answer, including for awkward cases like 31 January to 1 March.

When stepping forward by months lands on a day that does not exist — 31 January plus one month — the date is clamped to the last day of the shorter month rather than rolling into the next one. This matches how people describe durations and how most legal and administrative conventions treat them.

All arithmetic runs on UTC-normalised dates, so the result never shifts by a day because of your timezone.

Counting months first and days second is what guarantees a non-negative day count in every case, including across February and leap years.

The same span can be described as 36 years 2 months 20 days, as 434 months and 20 days, or as 13,230 days. All three are correct; they simply use different units.

Things worth knowing

  • Government forms, school admissions and recruitment notifications usually specify an exact cut-off date for age. Use the "age as on" field with that date rather than today’s.
  • A person born on 29 February has a legal birthday of 28 February in non-leap years under most Indian administrative practice, which is what this calculator assumes.
  • Total days lived includes leap days, so it is slightly more than years × 365.
  • The Indian legal age of majority is 18, and eligibility ages for recruitment, schemes and licences vary — always check the specific notification rather than assuming a general rule.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my age as on a recruitment cut-off date?
Change the "age as on" field to the cut-off date given in the notification. Recruitment advertisements almost always specify a particular date, and eligibility is judged on that date rather than on the date you apply.
Why does the result show a different number of months than I expected?
Because months are not equal in length. Counting from 31 January to 1 March is one month and one day, not one month and one day of a fixed 30-day month. This calculator counts whole calendar months first, which is how people naturally describe the gap.
How is a 29 February birthday handled?
In leap years the birthday falls on 29 February. In other years this calculator treats it as 28 February, which reflects common Indian administrative practice. Check the specific authority’s rule if it affects an eligibility date.
Can I find my age on a past date?
Yes. Set "age as on" to any date after your date of birth, including a past one. This is useful for checking eligibility on a closing date that has already passed.
