How this calculator works

Weight conversions work the same way as length: every unit is defined by how many kilograms it equals, and converting means going to kilograms and back out again.

Two units here are specifically Indian and worth knowing. The quintal is 100 kilograms and is the unit in which agricultural produce is traded and in which minimum support prices are announced — a wheat MSP is quoted per quintal, not per kilogram.

The tola is the traditional unit for precious metals, equal to 11.6638 grams. Gold in India is now normally sold in grams and by the 10-gram unit, but the tola persists in older records, in jewellery valuations and in parts of the trade.

The imperial units are exact by definition: a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, which makes an ounce exactly 28.349523125 grams.

Each unit is defined by how many kilograms it equals. Converting via that common base means one table of factors covers every possible pair, and no conversion is ever more than two multiplications away from exact.

A quintal is 100 kg, so a price quoted per quintal divides by 100 to give the per-kilogram rate. Ten grams of gold — the standard Indian pricing unit — is about 0.857 tola.

Things worth knowing

  • A quintal is 100 kilograms in India. Minimum support prices and wholesale agricultural rates are quoted per quintal.
  • A tola is 11.6638 grams. Gold is now normally priced per 10 grams in India, so a tola is roughly 1.166 times the standard pricing unit.
  • Strictly, these are units of mass rather than weight. In everyday use the distinction rarely matters, but it does in physics.
  • The pound and ounce are defined exactly in terms of the kilogram, so imperial conversions here are exact rather than approximate.
  • Do not confuse the metric tonne (1,000 kg) with the US short ton or the imperial long ton, which are different.
