How to Find Government Schemes You Qualify For

There are official directories that let you search schemes by eligibility. Most people never find them because unofficial sites rank above them.

The short version

  • MyScheme is the official directory that matches schemes to your profile.
  • State schemes are separate from central ones and are easy to miss.
  • Check the URL ends in gov.in or nic.in before entering any personal detail.
  • No genuine scheme charges a fee for eligibility checking.

Start with the official directories

  • MyScheme, at myscheme.gov.in, is the National Scheme Delivery Platform. It lets you enter your details — age, occupation, State, category, income — and returns schemes you may be eligible for, both central and State.
  • India.gov.in maintains a directory of schemes and links to every department.
  • The National Government Services Portal at services.india.gov.in lists services alongside schemes.
  • Your State government portal has its own scheme section. State schemes are frequently the most relevant and the least publicised.

Think in categories

Rather than searching for a scheme by name, it is more productive to work through the categories that apply to your household. Most families qualify for something in at least one.

Get your documents in order first

Almost every scheme application asks for the same core set, and having them ready turns a multi-week process into a single sitting.

  • Aadhaar for every family member, with mobile numbers linked for OTP verification.
  • A bank account seeded with Aadhaar for direct benefit transfer — having an Aadhaar number on file with the bank is not the same as being seeded.
  • Income certificate, where a scheme has an income criterion.
  • Caste or category certificate, where applicable.
  • Domicile or residence certificate for State schemes.
  • Ration card, which many States use to establish household composition.

How to verify a scheme is real

  1. Find the scheme on myscheme.gov.in or on the ministry’s own website.
  2. Check that the official portal address ends in gov.in or nic.in.
  3. Confirm the implementing ministry or department is named, and that it exists.
  4. Be sceptical of any scheme promising a large cash transfer for a small registration fee. Genuine schemes do not charge for registration.
  5. Where a Common Service Centre assists you, the only charge should be the government-notified service fee, which is small and displayed.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one website that lists every government scheme?
MyScheme at myscheme.gov.in is the closest — it is the official National Scheme Delivery Platform and covers both central and State schemes, with an eligibility-based search. It is comprehensive but not exhaustive, so also check your State government portal.
How do I know a scheme website is genuine?
Check that the address ends in gov.in or nic.in, and that the implementing ministry or department is named. Genuine schemes never charge a registration fee, and no legitimate portal will ask you to share an Aadhaar OTP with a person.
Do I need to apply for every scheme separately?
Generally yes. Each scheme has its own application, its own portal and its own verification. MyScheme helps you find what you qualify for, but it does not submit applications on your behalf.
