How to Link PAN With Aadhaar

Linking takes a few minutes when the details match, and is a genuine problem when they do not. Here is both paths.

The short version

  • An unlinked PAN becomes inoperative, with real financial consequences.
  • Name, date of birth and gender must match exactly across both documents.
  • A fee may apply depending on your case — pay it before submitting the request.
  • Check the status afterwards; submitting is not the same as linking.

Name and date of birth mismatches

This is where most linking attempts fail, and the mismatches are usually trivial in human terms — an expanded initial, a middle name present on one document and absent on the other, a different spelling of the same name.

The system requires an exact match on name, date of birth and gender. There is no manual review.

  1. Compare the two documents carefully, character by character, including initials and middle names.
  2. Decide which document is wrong. Usually it is easier to correct whichever one has fewer downstream dependencies.
  3. To correct PAN details, use the correction application on the Protean or UTIITSL portal.
  4. To correct Aadhaar details, use myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, noting that name changes have limits on how often they can be made and that some updates require an enrolment centre.
  5. Wait for the correction to be processed and reflected, then attempt the linking again.

Who is exempt

Certain categories are not required to link, including some non-resident individuals, individuals of specified ages, non-citizens, and residents of specified States. The exemption list is set out in the relevant notification.

If you believe you fall into an exempt category, confirm it against the current notification on the income tax portal rather than assuming — the categories have been amended.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check whether my PAN is already linked?
Use the Link Aadhaar Status option on incometax.gov.in, which is available without logging in. It tells you directly whether the two are linked, and whether a request is pending.
My name differs slightly between PAN and Aadhaar. What do I do?
Correct one of them so they match exactly. Even an expanded initial or a middle name present on one document and not the other will cause linking to fail, because the check is automated with no manual review. Correct PAN through Protean or UTIITSL, and Aadhaar through myAadhaar.
I paid the fee but the linking request failed. Why?
Most often because the request was submitted before the payment was reflected in the system. Wait for the payment to appear against your PAN, then submit the linking request again. You should not need to pay a second time.
