Who this scheme is for
- Adult women from households that do not already have an LPG connection in any family member’s name.
- Households relying on firewood, coal, cow dung cakes or other solid fuels for cooking.
Benefits
- A deposit-free LPG connection issued in the name of an adult woman of the household.
- Support towards the cost of the first refill and the stove, as provided under the current scheme guidelines.
- Access to the regular LPG subsidy mechanism applicable to domestic consumers.
- Replacing solid cooking fuel reduces indoor air pollution, which is the health rationale the scheme was built around.
Eligibility
- The applicant must be an adult woman.
- No LPG connection may exist in the name of any member of the household.
- The household must belong to one of the categories specified in the scheme guidelines, which cover several identified deprived and vulnerable groups.
- A self-declaration of household composition is required as part of the application.
- The specific eligible categories have been revised as the scheme has expanded. Confirm the current list on pmuy.gov.in before applying.
Documents required
- Aadhaar of the applicant — used for identification and for subsidy transfer
- Aadhaar of all adult members of the household, as required by the distributor
- Bank account details with IFSC, in the applicant’s name, seeded with Aadhaar
- Ration card or another document establishing household composition, as specified by the oil marketing company
- A completed KYC form, available from the distributor or downloadable from the portal
- A self-declaration in the prescribed format confirming eligibility and household details
How to apply
- Open pmuy.gov.in and choose the oil marketing company you want the connection from — Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum or Hindustan Petroleum.
- You will be taken to that company’s portal to complete an online application, or you can download the KYC form to submit in person.
- Fill in the applicant’s details, household details and bank account details exactly as they appear on the supporting documents.
- Choose a nearby distributor from the list shown.
- Submit the application online, or take the completed KYC form and documents to the chosen distributor.
- The distributor verifies the documents and, once approved, issues the connection along with the cylinder, regulator and safety hose.
How to check your status
- Track the application on the portal of the oil marketing company you applied to, using the reference number issued at submission.
- The distributor you selected can also confirm the stage of your application directly.
- If the application is rejected, the reason is normally an existing LPG connection in the household or a mismatch in the household records. Both can be addressed with the distributor.
What the connection includes, and what it does not
The scheme removes the security deposit that would normally be payable for a domestic LPG connection, and provides support towards the first refill and the stove under the current guidelines. It does not make cooking gas permanently free.
After the initial support, refills are purchased at the applicable price, with the domestic subsidy credited to the linked bank account under the direct benefit transfer mechanism. Budgeting for ongoing refills is the part households most often underestimate.
Safety, and why the distributor visit matters
- The distributor is required to demonstrate safe use of the cylinder, regulator and stove at the time of installation. Do not skip this.
- Check the safety hose periodically and replace it when it shows wear. It has a limited service life.
- Report a suspected leak by turning off the regulator, opening windows, avoiding electrical switches, and calling the distributor’s emergency number.
- Only accept cylinders from the authorised distributor, sealed and weighed in your presence.
