The Services Selection Board

Officer entry into the armed forces goes through the Services Selection Board, a five-day assessment that is unlike any written examination. It is worth understanding before deciding to pursue an officer entry.

  • Day one is a screening test — an officer intelligence rating test and a picture perception and discussion exercise. A majority of candidates are screened out here and return the same day.
  • Psychological tests, conducted over the following days, including thematic apperception, word association, situation reaction and a self-description exercise.
  • Group testing tasks — group discussion, group planning, outdoor obstacle tasks, command task and a lecturette. These assess how you function with and lead others.
  • A personal interview.
  • A conference on the final day, where the board collectively decides.
  • Recommended candidates then undergo a detailed medical examination, which is thorough and disqualifies a meaningful number.

Physical and medical standards

Every defence and police entry has physical standards — height, chest, weight — and a physical efficiency test with defined timings for running, long jump and high jump, which differ by gender, category and sometimes by region.

Medical standards are applied strictly and at the end of the process. Vision, hearing, dental fitness and a long list of specific conditions are assessed. Check the standard published with the notification before committing to a long preparation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Agnipath scheme?
A recruitment scheme under which personnel called Agniveers are enrolled in the armed forces for a fixed term, with a proportion retained thereafter in the regular cadre. The eligibility, term, benefits and retention provisions have been revised since introduction, so read the current notification on the official service website.
What happens at an SSB interview?
A five-day assessment beginning with a screening test that eliminates most candidates on day one, followed by psychological tests, group testing tasks, a personal interview and a final conference. It assesses officer-like qualities rather than academic knowledge, which is why written preparation alone does not carry candidates through it.
Who recruits for the central armed police forces?
UPSC conducts the Assistant Commandant examination for officer entry. SSC conducts Constable (GD) recruitment. Individual forces — CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB — also recruit directly for various posts through their own notifications, linked from the Ministry of Home Affairs website.
How does State police recruitment differ?
Each State has its own police recruitment board with its own notification, examination, physical standards and, frequently, a State language requirement and domicile condition. Look for your State’s police recruitment board rather than a national portal.
