• Each State has a Public Service Commission that recruits for Group A and Group B posts through a State civil services examination, usually structured like the UPSC examination with preliminary, main and interview stages.
• Most States also have a subordinate services selection board or staff selection commission for Group C posts.
• Police recruitment is normally handled by a separate State police recruitment board.
• Teaching recruitment is handled by the State education department or a dedicated recruitment board.
• Individual State departments and State-owned corporations also recruit directly for specialist posts.

State recruitment carries two conditions that central recruitment usually does not, and both catch out candidates applying outside their home State.

• Domicile. Many State posts are restricted to permanent residents of that State, and require a domicile certificate from the State revenue authority. Living in a State is not the same as being domiciled there.
• Language. Many States require proficiency in the State language, sometimes tested in a qualifying paper, sometimes as a stated eligibility condition. This applies particularly to police, clerical and teaching posts.
• Reservation also differs. State OBC lists are not the same as the central list, and States have their own additional reserved categories. A certificate valid for a State post may not be valid for a central one, and the reverse is also true.

2. From the State portal, find the recruitment or careers section, or the State Public Service Commission website.
3. Bookmark the specific commission or board site rather than relying on search each time.
4. Check whether the commission publishes an annual examination calendar — most do, and it lets you plan a year ahead.
