How to check your result

  1. Go to upsc.gov.in and open the Examination section, then Results.
  2. Select the examination and the stage — preliminary, main or final.
  3. The result is a PDF listing the roll numbers of successful candidates.
  4. Use the find function to search for your roll number.
  5. Marks of candidates are published separately, usually some weeks after the final result, under the same section.

UPSC publishes more than most commissions

After the final result of the Civil Services Examination, UPSC publishes a set of transparency documents that are genuinely useful and widely under-read.

  • Marks of recommended candidates, broken down by written examination and personality test.
  • Marks of candidates who were not recommended, available to those candidates.
  • Category-wise cut-off marks for each stage.
  • The answer key for the preliminary examination, released after the full process concludes.

Understanding the cut-off

The preliminary cut-off is based only on the General Studies paper. The CSAT paper is qualifying at the prescribed minimum and does not count towards the cut-off — a candidate who scores well in CSAT but below the General Studies cut-off does not qualify.

The main examination cut-off is based on the papers that count towards merit, excluding the two qualifying language papers. The final cut-off adds the personality test marks.

How do I find out my marks?
UPSC publishes marks of both recommended and non-recommended candidates after the final result of the Civil Services Examination, along with category-wise cut-offs. These appear on upsc.gov.in under the same section as the results.
Does the CSAT paper count towards the preliminary cut-off?
No. CSAT is qualifying only, at the prescribed minimum. The preliminary cut-off is calculated on the General Studies paper alone. Passing CSAT is necessary but contributes nothing to whether you clear the preliminary stage.
When is the preliminary answer key released?
UPSC releases the preliminary answer key after the entire examination process for that cycle concludes, not immediately after the examination. This is a longstanding practice and differs from most other commissions.
